Made In USA, 1984-1985
This is a transition era model
From the original Music Man models, and the Ernie Ball acquisition of 1984
It has a history, changed parts, and story to tell
It has the pre-EB Sting Ray bridge with the "B0" serial
(examples of original MM bridges on EB models exist up to the end of 1988)
The original SR4 pickup is present
This is the second version MM pickup from the end half of 1977 to end of Pre-EB 1984
(in line with the bass being a 1984 model)
It has the correct period 3/8 inch diameter pole pieces, with 5/8 inch length
With the poles being flush with the bottom of the pickup cover
And the correct green and yellow coil connection wiring
The body pickup cavity has the correct routing
This was reshaped, circa 1982 onward, to the outline of the pickup
It also has the correct threaded screw body inserts, for pickup height adjustment
(note the pickup cavity and control cavity have both had black conductive shielding paint applied at some point in time)
The original non-epoxied, and correct period, Pre Amp is present
(this version pre amp also used by EB from 1984 to 1990)
Correct "LM4250CN" chip with grey electrolytic capacitors are present
(electrolytic capacitors appear on the non-epoxied preamps from mid-late 1982)
The original CTS pot serials date to 41st week of 1983
(in line with the bass being a 1984 model)
With the correct era, 1982 onward, linear taper “LIN” identification stamp
This bass came from its 2nd owner (you will be the 3rd owner), with a changed neck
At some point in the early 90s the original neck was broken beyond repair
The original owner had the neck (currently fitted) custom made and installed
(the origin and luthier unknown)
This neck was made at an incredibly high standard
It is REMARKABLY close to an exact replica in profile, weight, feel
It has had approx. 25 year of play on it, and feels worn in and fluent
The edges are comfortable and rounded, with a low fast action
The decal to the front of headstock is an Ernie Ball Sting Ray decal
(as the original would have been)
BUT it is not the exact “Trans” first logo from mid 1985 to late 1987
The rear of headstock has been left blank, correct of this era as it would have been
(it was not until late 1987 that the "MADE IN SAN LUIS CALIFORNIA, USA" decal was added)
The string tree and tuners are all original, from the original neck
The truss rod was installed as a bottom mount, and is a hex key adjustment
At this time a small route is visible and was made in the body, at the neck junction
This enabled the truss rod to be adjusted, without removing the neck
(like all early top mount or later bottom wheel mount Sting Rays can be)
The pickguard is non original, with the modern wheel cut out
So the above mentioned routing is just visible
The original neck plate has also been replaced at the time of the new neck install
The rest is all straight forward Sting Ray specs…
Sunburst finish over Ashwood body
Maple one piece neck
21 fret, 34"scale length, 1.625" Nut Width
Hardened steel bridge plate, string through body
MM humbucking pickup, electronics, and 2 Band EQ
Iconic super-punchy bass tone and phenomenal low-end
Suitable for all styles of playing - finger, pick, slap, thump/pluck and tap
One of the most iconic basses produced, with an unrevealed tone
It has a light road worn look, from decades of genuine wear and play
All genuinely adding to its charm and history
It is not an all original collectors piece, but it is one hell of a player’s bass
Includes an original EB Music Man 1980s - early 90s period Hard Shell Case
All machinery, electrical, and pickups are without issue. Some surface marks, some very impressions/dings/dimples, some paint chips and edge wear, machinery has some spotting and light gaining and dullness - as pictured.
It has a non original pickguard fitted, that has been spray painted flat black. Brand new pickguard screws added. Non original neck – as explained in detail above. Non original neck plate. Brand new (non original) string through body ferrules have been installed – as the originals were not present

A great amount of pride and detail goes into making sure every item arrives safe and in a timely manner. Pedals and small items are packed in multiple layering of bubble wrap and double corrugated shipping cardboard. Guitars, pending the instrument, have strings de tuned so there is no tension on the neck and headstock. Neck/body /headstock are wrapped separately in multiple bubble wrap layers, high density foam and/or cardboard reinforced. If applicable it is then placed in gig/soft case or hard case. If in gig/soft case it is once again bubble wrapped/foam reinforced before being boxed. Each package/box is custom cut and fit in heavy duty double corrugated shipping cardboard. All voids are padded out and the body edge, base, and top of head stock foam reinforced/padded. Finally, the boxing will have copious amounts of high visibility “Fragile” and “This way up” warning labels.
--- We are also extremely environmentally conscious. We recycle almost all bubble wrap, foam, and cardboard packaging material that arrives with all deliveries in, and then order out.
